Rafael & Mathilde Hug Pédeutour

Malans, Grisons – Switzerland

Taking over an estate, revealing its terroirs

Since 2019, Rafael Hug and Mathilde Hug Pédeutour have been breathing new life into this historic Malans estate, founded by Peter Wegelin. Their philosophy is clear: understand the soils, respect natural rhythms, and produce wines that accurately express their origin.

Across their 5 large plots, they work according to strict biodynamic principles. Each site has its own personality, each wine its own vibration. In the cellar, they add nothing, remove nothing: spontaneous fermentations, long aging, zero additives, and very little sulfur. Here, they trust the grape.

The grand terroirs of Wegelin

Scadena: sandstone & phyllite limestone · powerful tannins · structure and aging potential

Weisstorkel : clay & dark limestone · warmth & spice · baroque style

Bothmarhalde : 670 m altitude · finesse, freshness, minerality

Frassa : pure Chardonnay · silico-calcareous soil · mineral, saline, taut

Grape varieties & style

Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Completer & Pinot Noir

→ Lively, precise, unadorned wines. The Pinots are refined, complex, made for aging; the whites are taut, saline, with great energy.

The philosophy of Rafael & Mathilde

“We give our wines the freedom they need to evolve... The important thing is to listen to the grape, not to correct it.”
